I have exciting news!  San Miguel is hosting a one-week celebration of the performing arts during Encuentro de Teatro San Miguel.  The week-long event will include workshops during the day and theatre productions at night

Following is a description of Mark’s fun and informative workshop:

“We’re looking for a few drama queens (and kings).  This four-day workshop, offered during Encuentro de Teatro San Miguel, a one-week celebration of the performing arts, aims to help writers and actors become more knowledgeable about the 10-minute play form, and to encourage them to write and submit their own plays.  By the end of the workshop, participants will have completed a short play and will know how and where to submit it for production.

“A successful ten-minute play is a compressed theatrical experience, with a beginning, middle, and end, almost always set in one location, with limited staging requirements, and almost always featuring a small cast, often only two to three characters,” said workshop presenter Mark Saunders.  “It’s not merely a scene from a longer play, a skit or a monologue.  It’s a play.”

The 10-minute play was introduced at the Actors Theatre of Louisville’s 1977 Humana Festival.  Since then, this dynamic and challenging form, “the American theater’s haiku,” has been embraced by actors and audiences around the US.  Accomplished playwrights including David Henry Hwang, Steven Dietz, Tina Howe, Athol Fugard, Brian Friel, Theresa Rebeck and Tony Kushner have written 10-minute plays.

The workshop will be held Monday through Thursday, August 27 to August 30, from 10:30 AM to noon, at El Sindicato, Recreo #4.

Pre-registration is required.   The cost is 150 pesos per session.  Register for the workshop at THIS LINK by August 24 and save 100 pesos!

Thirty of Mark’s short plays have been performed across the United States. Several have won awards and two have been published. His humorous memoir, Nobody Knows the Spanish I Speak, was voted one of the top three books by a local author in 2012.  Mark is a full-time resident of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.

Mark’s workshop will be taught in English.  Several other workshops and evening productions will be in Spanish. The organizers intend to create a truly bi-lingual event.
