This is an interesting article written by Harriet Cochran Murray about the pro’s and con’s of buying property in Puerto Vallarta or San Miguel de Allende: “Ten years ago a client bought a stunning home in Puerto Vallarta with 360 degree views of the bay, mountains and jungle. While she is here she is mostly content staying at home being surrounded by the water, sky and mountain range. She still conducts her work keeping hours which enable her to consult with clients in Japan and Europe, the east and western coasts of the USA.
A favorite past time is enjoying the local foods, particularly chili rellnos, enchiladas, fajitas. Shopping is usually for local crafts, particularly paper maché chickens in all sizes and blown glass ornaments hung to catch the sunlight. Art Walk on Wednesdays in an occasion to see current exhibits and meet the artists. Afterward dinner with friends caps off the evening.
This year T implemented the second step of her plan to have a mountain home. Where did she choose to buy? She tells me the best value she found is San Miguel de Allende, in the mountains 7 hours away from Puerto Vallarta. Why SMA? Again, as when buying in Puerto Vallarta, the value for the price has been so much better than on the ocean or in the mountains in California or Florida, or Europe.
In San Miguel, T walks out her front door near the town square. Here history abounds in the colonial buildings and streets. Here the fight for Mexican Independence from Spain began. San Miguel is an UNESCO national heritage site. Here expats live all year long. The community is less transient is more integrated with the Nationals and foreigners from all parts of the world.”
